15 Best Things to Do in Peachtree City (GA)

Peachtree City is located in central Georgia, in the south Metro Atlanta area. While just 50 kilometres from the state capital, it has its own distinct suburban feel.

This feeling is strengthened by the string of parks, lakes, and open spaces Peachtree City contains. There are also several golf courses, and 140 km of dedicated golf cart paths. Around 10,000 families use them to get about instead of the roads.

Not to be confused with Peachtree Corners in the northern suburbs of Atlanta, Peachtree City is a tranquil escape – with the police department consisting of just a single vehicle in 1965.

However, there is still plenty for the visitor to see and do within the city limits, as well as within a couple of hours driving time.

These are the best things to do in and around Peachtree City, Georgia.

1. Southern Hollywood Film Tour

Lasting around two hours, this Southern Hollywood Film Tour is not only a way of seeing some iconic film locations, but also of providing a first look at Peachtree City itself.

A surprising number of movies have been shot in the region, perhaps due to the proximity of Pinewood Atlanta Studios and Raleigh Studios.

The first has been the studio behind many movies in the Marvel universe, including Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider Man, while the second is home to the hit TV series The Walking Dead.

Tours take in locations in nearby Senoia and Haralson too, blending scenes from movies like Sweet Home Alabama with the real thing.

2. Lake Kedron and Lake McIntosh

Formed from the damming of Flat Creek, Lake Kedron is a multi-fingered man-made lake on the northern edges of Peachtree City.

Its waters cover nine hectares, and provide one of several places where it’s possible to get outside and enjoy the Georgia countryside.

Fishing is the main recreational activity that takes place both at Lake Kedron and the much larger Lake McIntosh.

The second also allows the use of boats, with access via Lake McIntosh Park. Here visitors will also find walking trails through the shoreline woods, a pavilion, children’s playground and toilets.

3. Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing

The CAF Dixie Wing is based at Atlanta Regional Airport – Falcon Field, which lies on the eastern side of Peachtree City.

It is a museum and display team in one, and boasts one of the largest collections of historic aircraft in the United States.

The majority date from the Second World War and the Korean War periods, making these aging beasts around 80 years old.

In addition to the all-important restoration workshop, largely run by volunteers and paid for by donations, there is also a display of original World War Two artefacts.

But perhaps the most impressive part of the Dixie Wing is the opportunity to take to the air in one of these vintage planes.

4. Mastermind Escape Games

Those without a head for heights might instead want to pay a visit to Mastermind Escape Games.

Here you and your group will pit your wits against a series of challenges and clues with the intention of escaping from a locked room in less than an hour.

The centre has five different rooms to choose from, each uniquely themed so that you can take part in an Ocean’s Eleven style bank heist, attempt to evade the zombie hoards as in The Walking Dead, or even fight an evil sorcerer.

But be warned, this is no easy task, with escape rates that linger around 30-40%. You’re going to need to have your wits about you to succeed!

5. Line Creek Nature Area

This area of protected land spans 28 hectares between Wynns Pond and Lake McIntosh.

The creek’s shallow waters provide a constant trickling as it runs over rocks right across the nature area, alongside hardwood forest and the beauty of the native azaleas.

There’s also a small fish-filled pond, reached via several kilometres of gentle hiking trails. Next to the pond is a picnic area, while elsewhere within the park is a wetland with observation deck.

The wetland is a great way of exploring the water cycle – demonstrating how storm runoff ends up filtered through the earth to eventually become the water that pours from our taps.

6. Carlos Museum

Atlanta’s Carlos Museum has been one of the most important museums in the southeast of the United States for close to a century.

Dedicated to arts and artefacts from right around the world, its extensive collections include objects from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

It goes on to cover African and Asian cultures in equal detail, while European Renaissance sketches form another important component.

As a result, there’s no better place to explore the world in this part of America, with visitors almost guaranteed to find some object that blows their mind.

The Carlos Museum is approximately 50 km north of Peachtree City.

7. Golf

Golfers new and old pay attention! Peachtree City has no less that five different golf clubs, while another dozen lie within easy access to the city.

Georgia’s fantastic weather means it’s a sport that can be played all year round, and can have the added excitement of more unusual forms of wildlife attempting to join each game.

Planterra Ridge was designed by Jeff Burton and Rocky Roquemore and first played in 1994. At the other end of the spectrum, Flat Creek was opened in 1968 to a design by Joe Lee, and incorporates the creek in its shifting elevations.

8. Road to Tara Museum

The Road to Tara Museum is situated within Clayton County, the setting for Margaret Mitchell’s bestselling novel and multi-awarding winning film, Gone with the Wind.

The museum uses Mitchell’s story as a means of detailing the realities of life during the American Civil War period and its immediate aftermath.

Original props from the film, reproductions of some of the costumes used by Vivien Leigh in playing Scarlett O’Hara, and contemporary film scripts can all be seen.

Alongside these artefacts are photographs and personal accounts of the war in Jonesboro and the surrounding area, around 30 minutes driving time from Peachtree City.

9. Frederick Brown Jr Amphitheatre

Known in Peachtree City simply as ‘The Fred’, this amphitheatre is an open-air concert venue that has been attracting major talent to its stage for several decades.

This 2,500-seater space provides an intimate setting in which to enjoy bands old and new, with its open-air nature providing an additional excitement compared to indoor arenas.

Over the years The Fred has welcomed everyone from Huey Lewis and the News to Gladys Knight, and has been voted the best music venue in the Atlanta region more than once.

10. Line Creek Brewing Company

If there are two things that go well together it’s fresh spring water and breweries, which is what lead to the creation of Peachtree City’s very first brewing company.

The idea for the Line Creek Brewing Company developed purely and simply because of a local love of good-quality craft beers.

Though using modern techniques in the brewing process, it does not forget the traditions of this ancient artform.

Line Creek have created beers that are able to meet the needs of the occasional beer drinker and the most avid fans as a result.

Their beers include the Rangefinder American-style lager, to more unusual combinations such as the Jay Byrd N The Boyz passion fruit Berliner weisse beer.

11. Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House

A beautiful survivor from Georgia’s antebellum period, this Greek Revival style mid-nineteenth century home comes complete with two storey columns on its front façade, creating a double-height veranda.

Just a block away from Courthouse Square in the Fayette County seat of Fayetteville, since the early 2000s it has been a museum dedicated to local history.

Its historic rooms are divided into specific themes, from the authors of Fayette County, to sections on how the Civil War affected this part of Georgia.

There is also a room dedicated to the family life of its original owners, the Hollidays, linked to both Margaret Mitchell and ‘Doc’ Holliday, involved in the gunfight at the OK Corral.

Fayetteville is 15 km east of Peachtree City.

12. Zac Brown’s Southern Ground

Intricately associated with country music, no trip to Georgia can be considered complete without exploring this genre of angst and lost love.

There is no shortage of bars that play its music, but you could instead delve into the artistry of the Georgia-based country/rock crossover the Zac Brown Band.

This exhibition space covers the entirety of life as a band, from the writing process for Grammy award-winning songs, to agreeing the designs of the merchandise for sale in the shop.

13. Flint River Adventures

Rising in Georgia’s Fulton Country, the Flint River runs south into Florida through some stunning areas of natural beauty.

These include the area around the city of Thomason, an hour south of Peachtree City, where Flint City Adventures is based.

The company rents out its kayaks, as well as offering half and full days tours of the region by water.

Its tours take in family-friendly class I and II rapids, in addition to the dramatic mountain scenery around Sprewell Bluff Park.

14. Peachtree City Farmers Market

If healthy, locally-produced foods that haven’t travelled halfway across a continent interest you, be sure to check out Peachtree City Farmers Market.

Operating every Wednesday and Saturday morning, its group of stalls bring together some of the finest producers in the region.

Market day brings around 60 vendors to the streets, who are enthusiastic campaigners for the food they produce. They are happy to describe the lives of the animals at the butchers’ stalls, or what goes intro producing the very best peaches Georgia has to offer.

Other stalls have items that would make perfect gifts, including jars of honey, pottery, and even jewellery.
