Foreign policy
Baerbock has concentrated much of her political energies on international issues, taking a centrist stance on security and advocating for a stronger EU foreign policy. Last year, the party adopted a program that portrayed NATO as a “indispensable” part of European security and supported an extension of EU defense cooperation, much to the chagrin of some conventional Green voters.

She has, however, criticized the alliance’s goal of all members spending at least 2% of GDP on defense as “not very helpful.” She called for “a common and solid foreign policy” on Monday. Many in the German mainstream have been harsher on Russian President Vladimir Putin and other authoritarian leaders than the Greens.
“If Germany’s voice in foreign policy fails — whether it’s in relation to the tensions in Ukraine, Russia’s attitude, or the Nord Stream 2 initiative — Europe will be destroyed,” she said on Monday.
That stance would make the Greens an odd match for a post-election alliance with the Social Democrats and Die Linke, all of whom have softened their stance on Russia.
Climate connection
Baerbock made a personal link between her family life and her climate ambitions when she introduced as the party’s chancellor candidate on Monday. Baerbock is married to political strategist Daniel Holefleisch, with whom she shares two children, born in 2011 and 2015. They reside in Potsdam, which is located southwest of Berlin.)
In her speech, Baerbock told the story of being with her younger daughter, then an infant, when the Paris Climate Agreement was adopted. When the formal announcement made, the two were in a room with Laurent Fabius, the French foreign minister at the time.
“When my daughter is as old as I was then, 35, she will probably have little children and I will be a grandmother in 2050, the year for which this climate conference has set its big goa“
Sports champion
Baerbock was a competitive trampolinist as a child and teenager, competing in national competitions. Sports helped her integrate during her year as an exchange student in the United States, she said in an interview earlier this year.
“To feel alien, to feel what it’s like not to know a language so well and what that does to one’s character and self-confidence,” she said, adding that soccer helped her bond with others.
On the soccer field, it doesn’t matter whether you can show your humor in the language or not; it all comes down to how well you shoot a corner. That is why sport has remained a core social problem for me because it is so vital for social cohesion.”ls,” she said. “By that time, we would have developed climate-friendly prosperity.”
