He went to Peninsula School and then Melbourne Law School, where he received a prize for a final-year thesis he co-authored, A Tax to Make the Polluter Pay, which he co-authored. In 1992, Hunt worked as an associate to the Chief Justice of Australia’s Federal Court, and then went on to Yale University as a Fulbright Scholar, earning a Master of Arts in International Relations.

Hunt has been a member of the Liberal Party since 1994. Hewas first elected to parliament in 2001, replacing retiring Peter Reith in the Flinders Division. Following the 2004 federal election, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment and Heritage. This was his first promotion to the ministry. Hunt was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in January 2007. He was named Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Environment, and Urban Water after the Coalition’s defeat in the 2007 election. After the 2010 election, his title was changed to Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Environment, and Heritage.
Hunt was named Minister for the Environment in the Abbott goverment, after the 2013 federal election. As one of his first acts as minister, he informed Tim Flannery, the head of the Gillard government’s Climate Commission, that the government was closing the agency, as promised in its election platform. He announced a project to dredge Abbot Point in December 2013, which the Marine Park Authority accepted in January 2014. Hunt was retained as Minister for the Environment in the new Turnbull Government following the change in Liberal Party leadership in September 2015.
