Chou Tzu-yu was born on June 14, 1999 in East District of Tainan, Taiwan and known mononymously as Tzuyu. Tzuyu appeared on the internet variety show My Little Television on November 28, 2015, along with her non-Korean TWICE fellow members. Tzuyu held a Taiwanese flag during the program to show her nationality. For their country, Japan, Member Mina, Sana, and Momo did the same. Tzuyu’s action, however, was picked up by China-based Taiwanese singer Huang An, who opposes Taiwan’s independence from China, and described Tzuyu as a Taiwanese independence supporter on his Weibo account. In response to the controversy, JYP China stated on it official Weibo account that the activities of TWICE in China would be stopped until the misunderstanding had been resolved.

As an apology, on January 15, 2016, a Tzuyu video released on JYPE’s channel. She is seen standing in front of a gray wall in a casual attire in the video, facing the camera. In addition to the general public, the video had a very polemical YouTube rating that stirred backlash against the video.
