Forster was born in Rochester, New York on 13 July 1941, the son of Grace Dorothy (born Montanarella) and Robert Wallace Forster, Sr., who worked for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as an elephant trainer and then as an executive for a bakery supply company. His wife, though his father was of English and Irish origin, was Italian American. In 1949, the family were divorced.

He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts in History where he acted in college theater plays such as “Bye Bye Birdie” and instead chose to become an actor after initially planning to study law.
