Victory for Widow of PC Harper
Last night, it was announced that killing a police officer or a 999 operator will result in a mandatory life sentence. The legislative change is a big success for PC Andrew Harper’s widow, who was killed while responding to a burglary.
An amendment to the Police, Crime, Sentencing, and Courts Bill is expected to bring the modification to the statute book early next year.

Long, the group’s leader, confessed manslaughter, while Cole and Bowers, his passengers, were found guilty of manslaughter after a trial at the Old Bailey. All three were found not guilty of murder by the jury.

According to a Ministry of Justice official, the new penalty will be implemented as soon as practicable. Only the most extraordinary instances will be authorized for judges to waive the minimum life sentence.
