He worked as a rapporteur for European railway reform (4th Railway Package) and the Single European Sky as a member of the Commission for Transport and Tourism.
With 128,533 preference votes, he was elected to the European Parliament for the third time in central Italy on May 26, 2019.

Sassoli was admitted to the hospital in Strasbourg in September 2021 with a serious case of pneumonia. He was unable to perform his duties for more than two months due to sickness, including missing the EU’s State of the Union address. Sassoli was admitted to the hospital again in December 2021, this time in Italy, for a “severe consequence attributable to immune system failure.”

Sassoli died at Aviano, Italy, at daybreak on January 11, 2022. He was 65 years old at the time.
