Spirig is preparing to retire from the “intense emotions” of racing.

Nicola Spirig, a Swiss superstar, has announced her retirement from professional triathlon at the end of the 2022 season. As she nears the end of a professional career spanning more than 20 years, Nicola Spirig understands that saying goodbye to triathlon will be difficult, and that she will never be able to entirely leave her training days behind her.

“I will always train because I just need to be active to feel good,” Spirig tells CNN Sport as she embarks on her final season in triathlon. “If I don’t move, I’m not happy; I’m moody, I’m angry, I just don’t feel good.”

In a Instagram post on Wednesday (6 April), the Swiss triathlete also announced her retirement at the age of 40, having spent more than half of her life competing at the highest level of triathlon competition.

Over the past 25 years, I’ve achieved just about everything I’ve ever dreamed of, both athletically and personally. At the end of this season it will be the right time for me to retire. A huge THANK YOU to my whole amazing, incredible team around me!!

Nicola’s career has been focused on the Standard distance (1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run), but she has also competed in half-distance races and won her first full-distance triathlon in 2014. Spirig won her first half-distance triathlon in 2007, and she has never finished off the podium in 11 races, with 11 wins, three seconds, and a third. The Swiss star’s resume also includes some world-class running accomplishments, most notably a 2.37 marathon performance.
