Heavy Russian strikes attacked the southern Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv late Saturday night and early Sunday, July 31, 2022. Oleksiy Vadatursky, 74, was a renowned billionaire in Ukraine’s grain industry, owning and operating the exporting company Nibulon. He was formerly regarded as the country’s 24th richest person and was the recipient of the “Hero of Ukraine” award.

According to local sources, he and his wife, Raisa, were slain in their home during a massive Russian bombing of Mykolaiv, a significant city in southern Ukraine. According to one politician, it was a targeted attack. A hotel, a sports center, two schools, a service station, and several homes were damaged.

The businessman’s death was a “great loss for Mykolaiv … and all of Ukraine,” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said. “For more than 50 years of his career, Oleksiy Vadatursky made an invaluable contribution to the development of the region and the development of the agricultural and shipbuilding industries of our country.”

Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych said cluster munitions blew out windows and destroyed balconies. “Mykolaiv was under mass shelling today. Probably the strongest one of all time,” he said in a statement.

Oleksiy Opanasovich Vadaturskyi was born on September 8, 1947, in Bendzary, Baltic District, Odessa Region, to a collective farm worker family. He realized at a young age that hard work is required to achieve anything.

“My parents worked hard,” he says. “They have taught me to work since my childhood. This hard lesson helped me a lot.”

He graduated from the M.V. Lomonosova Institute of Technology in 1971, specializing in “Automation and complicated mechanization of chemical-technological processes.”

Vadaturskyy was appointed lead power engineer for the development of a regional bread-producing factory in Mykolaiv after graduating from the Odessa Technological Institute of Food Industry. He was appointed as the first deputy-general director of the Mykolaiv bread products department a few years later.

Three persons were also injured in the Mykolaiv attacks, according to Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych, who added that 12 missiles hit residences and educational facilities. He had previously labeled the strikes as “perhaps the most powerful” on the city in the five-month battle.

On Sunday morning, up to 50 Grad rockets hit residential areas in another southern city, Nikopol, according to Dnipropetrovsk Governor Valentyn Reznichenko on Telegram. One individual was injured.

The Crimean port city mayor, Mikhail Razvozhayev, informed Russian media that Ukrainian forces attacked the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Russian-held Sevastopol early Sunday. Five employees were injured in the attack when what appeared to be a drone flew into the headquarters’ courtyard, he claimed.
