11 Home Remedies for Cystic Acne

When you’re a teenager it’s normal to have acne breakouts on your face and back. But if you have large, red, and painful breakouts deep in your skin even once you get older, it could mean you’ve developed cystic acne. It is treatable and should not be ignored because cystic acne can linger for years and can leave permanent scars if not addressed. A dermatologist will identify the most suitable treatment for you but there are some natural remedies that can also help you calm down the onset of the condition.

Keep your hands away

Touching and trying to pop cystic acne is the worst thing to do. The cyst will become inflamed and infection will spread to surrounding tissues. It will also increase the chances of prominent scars after the cyst disappears. Cysts are typically too deep under the skin to be popped, so resist the temptation to try and don’t touch them.

Honey

Honey has a wide range of antiseptic, antibacterial and exfoliating properties and works wonders wonder for cystic acne. Regularly applied, it not only calms inflammation and kills bacteria but also gently exfoliates removing the layer of dead skin that can cause inflammation and cystic acne itself. Apply honey to the face for 10-15 minutes at a time and rinse with warm water.

DIY Green Tea Wash

Green Tea is a known antiseptic and antibacterial but it also inhibits sebum production, excess levels of which tend to cause more cystic acne. You can always buy one, but the best way is to make one from scratch – brew some green tea and mix it with mineral water. Add a few drops of tea tree oil and your wash is ready!

Change your diet

Diet has a huge effect on the condition of your skin. Diets rich in dairy products have been found to increase production of sebum leading to more cystic breakouts. Try to reduce your dairy intake and focus on plant-based alternatives such as nut milks and soy-based products. Some studies show a link between low-glycaemic diets and a reduction in cystic acne. This type of diet focuses on eating whole grain foods, vegetables and legumes, which take a while to digest. Try to cut back on quickly absorbed foods like the refined grains found in white breads and white pastas and avoid sugar and alcohol.

Potato mask

Increased oil production often plays a critical role in cystic acne frequency. Potatoes are perfect when it comes to removing excess oil from yoyr skin – you can just make a very simple potato mask. Peel 2-3 potatoes and blend them into a paste. Apply it on your face for 15-20 minutes and then rinse with warm water. It will help to unclog pores and reduce redness.

Ice

Placing an ice pack or ice cubes wrap in a cloth can help to reduce inflammation and will make cysts less painful and less visible. Wrap the ice in dishcloth or towel to avoid burning the skin and place it on the affected areas for 10-15 minutes.

Egg whites

Egg whites are rich in riboflavin, which can help to smooth your complexion and clear cystic acne. Separate yolks and whites and apply them to areas affected by acne. Wash your face with warm water after 5-10 minutes, and repeat the process twice a week. This treatment may be especially useful for reducing scarring.

Baking soda

Good not only when it comes to fixing dishwashers and washing machines but also when it comes to healing your complexion. Baking soda has both anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that can help to fight cystic acne. Simply mix 1-2tbsp with enough water to form a paste, and apply the paste to the affected areas of your skin. Leave it for 15-20 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Turmeric

Turmeric also have a lot to offer – it is not only antibacterial but it is a rich source an anti-inflammatory compound called curcumin, which is known to cut down tissue inflammation. Similarly like with baking soda you can mix it with a little bit of water to form a paste or try drinking a daily glass of warm water with half a teaspoon of turmeric dissolved in it.

Relax

Stress disturbs hormonal balance and can worsen the acne. If you are constantly stressed and in the rush, make more of an effort to find time to relax. Even just committing to an hour of reading, exercising or practicing a favourite hobby each day can make a different to your overall mind-set. Try yoga or mindfulness breathing exercises to calm down and clear the mind.

Apple Vinegar Toner

With it’s antibacterial properties apple vinegar can be used to treat cystic acne infections at the root. Since apple cider vinegar also regulates the skin’s pH balance, using this toner in the long term could prevent future breakouts. You can make an acne-fighting toner by mixing 1tbsp of apple cider vinegar with 2tbsp of water and chilling it in the fridge. Apply it to your skin every morning and evening after cleansing and before moisturizing.
