An only child, McCarrick was born into an Irish American family in New York City to Theodore E. and Margaret T. McCarrick. His father was a ship captain who died from tuberculosis when McCarrick was three years old, and his mother then worked at an automobile parts factory in the Bronx.

The fun-loving Teddy studied a year in Switzerland and attended Fordham University before later studying at St. Joseph’s Seminary, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s. He earned a doctorate and second master’s from the Catholic University of America. He is American by nationality.

Theodore Edgar McCarrick sexual abuse and warned of alleged misconduct

In 1994, a priest addressed a letter to McCarrick’s successor as Bishop of Metuchen, Bishop Edward T. Hughes, alleging that McCarrick had sexually touched her. In 1994, Cardinal Agostino Cacciavillan, then the papal nuncio to the United States, received a phone call from a woman concerned that if Pope John Paul II visited Newark during his 1995 visit to the United States, there would be a media scandal due to “voices (rumors) about McCarrick’s behavior with seminarians.” The woman’s call was subsequently relayed to Cardinal John O’Connor, Archbishop of New York. 

“There was no hindrance to the Pope’s travel to Newark,” O’Connor told Cacciavillan after conducting a “examination, an inquiry.” According to Cacciavillan, he did not alert the Vatican. Ramsey complained about McCarrick’s behavior to the nuncio, Gabriel Montalvo Higuera, in 2000.

Two priests who had accused McCarrick of abuse received cash settlements from the Diocese of Metuchen and the Archdiocese of Newark between 2005 and 2007. A total of $180,000 was paid out in these settlements. Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski of Metuchen approved the payments and reported the crimes to law authorities.

Criminal charges

McCarrick was accused on July 29, 2021, of sexually abusing a 16-year-old male on the grounds of Wellesley College in Massachusetts during a wedding ceremony for the man’s brother in 1974. Wellesley Police filed the case in Dedham Criminal Court. “We will look forward to addressing this problem in the courtroom,” McCarrick’s attorney, Barry Coburn, was quoted in media reports as saying.
