She had three marriages in her life. Margaret was blissfully married to Daniel Francis McGuire at the time of her death. Keane met Honolulu sports reporter Dan McGuire in Hawaii and married him in 1970. She credits McGuire for assisting her in being less shy and fearful following her divorce from Walter. Keane spent more than 25 years in Hawaii before returning to California in 1991. 

Her daughter Jane Ulbrich from her first marriage and son-in-law Don Swigert lived in Napa County, California. Keane began hospice care in 2017 while still living in her home, at the age of 90. The increased care she received through hospice allowed her to recuperate sufficiently to “paint more and relax.”

Frank Richard Ulbrich was Keane’s first spouse. Margaret and Frank were married in 1948 and had a daughter named Jane Ulbrich. After seven years of marriage, they divorced in 1955.

Her second husband was Walter Keane

In 1955, after her divorce from her first husband, she married Walter Keane.Walter was an American plagiarist who rose to prominence in the 1960s as the alleged creator of a series of frequently replicated paintings featuring vulnerable figures with massive eyes. The paintings were acknowledged as the work of his wife Margaret Keane. When she started her side of the story, Walter Keane reacted with a USA Today piece claiming he had done the task yet again.

Margaret Keane sued Walter and USA Today in 1986. The judge demanded that the litigants paint a painting in the courtroom during the subsequent defamation suit, but Walter rejected, claiming a bad shoulder. Margaret then completed a painting in 53 minutes for the jurors. The jury awarded her $4 million in damages.

She left Walter in 1964 and divorced him a year later, causing her to relocate from San Francisco to Hawaii.
