Ressa’s first work was with the government television channel PTV 4. In 1987, she co-founded the independent production firm Probe while still serving as CNN’s bureau chief in Manila until 1995. From 1995 to 2005, she oversaw CNN’s Jakarta office. Ressa led ABS-news CBN’s division beginning in 2004, while simultaneously writing for CNN and The Wall Street Journal. She authored an article for The Wall Street Journal in September 2010 criticizing then-President Benigno Aquino III’s handling of the bus hostage issue.

She has written books regarding the growth of terrorism in Southeast Asia: Seeds of Terror: An Eyewitness Account of Al-Newest Qaeda’s Center (2003) and Al-Newest Qaeda’s Center (2004). Ressa nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 by Norwegian Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader Jonas Gahr Stre. Ressa, together with Dmitry Muratov of the Russian Federation, formally confirmed as the prize’s recipient on October 8, 2021. They were given the medal “for their efforts to protect freedom of expression, which is a prerequisite for democracy and sustainable peace.” Ressa and Muratov are the first journalists to receive the Nobel Peace Prize since 1935.

Why was Maria arrested in 2019?

On February 13, 2019, Philippine authorities arrested her for cyberlibel after allegations that Rappler published a bogus news item against businessman Wilfredo Keng. Ressa was convicted on June 15, 2020. Maria faces up to six months in prison and a fine of ₱400,000 ($8,000). Ressa said that her conviction could spell the end of press freedom in the Philippines.
