The young girl has been identified almost precisely a year after her remains were found in a duffel bag buried in an Oregon forest. According to the Oregon State Police, a passerby strolling through the H.B. Van Duzer Scenic Corridor in Lincoln County, Oregon, saw the bag on Dec. 10, 2020, and informed authorities. Investigators thought the body had been there for 30-60 days based on decomposition at the time. In early October, DNA was sent to a lab, which returned a positive ID; nevertheless, the Oregon State Police did not announce the news until Wednesday.

According to an Oregon State Police press statement, the girl’s name is Haley Mae Coblentz. Haley was born in Colorado and had been living in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest with her mother and her mother’s girlfriend since 2015. Her disappearance was never reported.

Shawna Browning, Haley’s mother, and Lauren Harrison, Browning’s girlfriend, were arrested at a hotel in Detroit, Mich., on Monday after being tracked there by OSP investigators with the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Detroit office.

Browning and Harrison were arrested on aggravated murder warrants issued by Lincoln County and are being held without bond at the Andrew C. Baird Detention Facility in Wayne County, Michigan, pending extradition to Oregon to face charges.

Crystal Coblentz, who identified himself as Haley’s father, was contacted by the News-Times and conveyed the circumstances of her disappearance over six years ago. Crystal claimed they had not been contacted by investigators and had only heard vague details about Haley’s discovery from friends and family Tuesday morning until being contacted by News-Times staff Wednesday evening.

In 2010, Crystal moved to Colorado with their father, who later passed away in 2014. During that time, Crystal was in a relationship with Browning, who became pregnant and gave birth to Haley. Crystal signed the birth certificate as Haley’s father and from birth to age five raised Haley. Browning went on to have another child with another man.

“I didn’t have any means of getting to Oregon or any way of finding out anything,” Crystal said. “Me and my aunt just celebrated Haley’s birthday on Oct. 21 because she was supposed to have turned 10 …”

“I had no idea,” Crystal continued. “thought that one day she would get older and she’s going to find out and look up who her father is. I thought that she would remember me because I took care of her until she was five years old. She was my kid too, and I had been trying to find her ever since. Then I woke up to all of this. don’t know what to think now. I never thought it would be like this. didn’t even know people had found her and were trying to figure out who she was. I’m so lost right now.”

Shawna Browning, 29, and Lauren Harrison, 34, were arrested and charged with aggravated murder on Tuesday in Detroit, Mich. Both have been held in custody without bail. A cause of death for Haley was not announced till now.

According to a report from The Oregonian, Browning and Harrison were homeless, and spent most of the last five years roaming around the Pacific Northwest and panhandling. Browning has reportedly been estranged from her family for many years due to having suffered through a “traumatic childhood,” a relative told the outlet.

The two women are being jailed without bond at the Wayne County Jail. They are set to appear in court for the first time on Wednesday as officials attempt to get them extradited back to Oregon to stand trial. They face the death penalty or a maximum sentence of life in prison.
