Dr. Bing Liu Biography

Dr. Bing Liu a medical researcher at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He was found shot dead on May 2, 2020. He was said to be on the “verge of making very significant” coronavirus findings.

Bing Liu Age

Bing was 37 years old at the time of his death.

Bing Liu Education

Liu has a Bachelor of Computer Science from the National University of Singapore and a  Ph.D. in computational science from the same institution.

Bing Liu University of Pittsburgh

Liu was a research assistant professor in the Computational Systems and Biology Department at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

According to his faculty page, he developed computational modeling, simulation and analysis techniques to study the dynamics of biological systems.

“My research area centers on computational systems biology. I develop computational modeling, simulation and analysis techniques to study the dynamics of biological systems. As an integral part of my research, I collaborate with a number of biologists and clinicians to study a variety of crucial biological processes related to human immunity and cancer. I also leverage high-performance computing, formal verification, and machine learning techniques to enable the analysis of multi-scale systems. Furthermore, I am applying the techniques I have been developing to analyze cyber-physical systems that are ubiquitous in safety-critical applications.”

He was a leader of the university’s Bahar Lab research into the immune system, modeling complex processes such as responses to radiation, radiation therapy, and immune signaling.

After his death, the School of Medicine released a statement describing him as an excellent mentor and prolific researcher who had co-authored more than 30 papers.

“It is with deep sadness and shock that we learned of the untimely passing of Dr. Bing Liu, Research Assistant Professor in our department on Saturday, May 2nd, 2020.

Dr. Bing Liu was an outstanding researcher, who has earned the respect and appreciation of many colleagues in the field, and made unique contributions to science. His area of expertise was computational modeling and analysis of biological systems dynamics. He had developed high-performance computing techniques and advanced machine-learning approaches for modeling the time evolution of complex cellular interactions, Bayesian network models and methods, and statistical model checking and sensitivity analyses.”

Bing Liu Pittsburgh Research

According to Pittsburgh University Bing was doing research  on coronavirus and was on the verge of ‘making very significant findings.’

“Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 infection and the cellular basis of the following complications. We will make an effort to complete what he started in an effort to pay homage to his scientific excellence.”

Bing Liu Killed

Bing was found dead on May 2, 2020 inside a home in Ross Township, north of Pittsburgh. The police said he died from apparent gunshot wounds to his head, neck and torso. Investigators say they now believe his death is a homicide.

Ross Township Police Department released a statement that said there was zero evidence that the murder was in connection with his work.

“We have found zero evidence that this tragic event has anything to do with employment at the University of Pittsburgh, any work being conducted at the University of Pittsburgh and the current health crisis affecting the United States and the world.”

According to the Ross Police Department, the police believe the deaths occurred on Saturday after a “lengthy dispute regarding an intimate partner.”

Bing Liu Hao Gu

Bing was allegedly killed by Hao Gun who was also found dead in his car on Charlemagne Circle, near Elm Court. Police say it appears he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The police allege that the two knew each other. Investigators believe Gu killed Liu before returning to his car, where he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
