In 2015, there were early elections. Yesh Atid lost seven seats and fell to fourth place in the Knesset. As the April 2019 elections neared, Lapid and his Yesh Atid party were primed for another strong showing, but they were still too weak to confront Netanyahu. Meanwhile, Benny Gantz, a political newbie but a well-known Israeli Defense Forces commander, emerged as Netanyahu’s most viable rival.

The coalition agreement permitted Naftali Bennett to be prime minister for the first half of the term, but it also allowed Lapid to take over if the government fell apart prematurely. Lapid’s first agenda item on his first day in office Friday was a meeting with Ronen Bar, the head of the Shin Bet security service, at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv. According to a statement from Lapid’s office, the meeting included a “wide defense and intelligence briefing on what is happening on the various fronts.”

Following that, the new prime minister will convene a conference to discuss “the hostages and MIAs,” referring to the two Israeli men and the remains of two IDF soldiers being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
