Korn is a nu-metal band that was formed in 1993 in Bakersfield, California, in America. The band is behind the pioneering of the nu-metal genre to enter the mainstream. The band was originally formed by three members of L.A.P.D., James Shaffer also Munky as the rhythm guitar, Reginald Arvizu also Fieldy as the bass, and David Silveria. The additional members of the band are Brian Welch “Head” (backing vocals and lead guitar), Jonathan Davis as lead vocals and bagpipes, and Ray Luzier, who replaced David Silveria in 2007 for drums.

Inception

Originally, Korn was formed by three members, James Shaffer, Reginald Arvizu, and David Silveria, and were all associated with L.A.P.D. Silveria joined the band when he was sixteen years. He dropped out of high school when the band moved from Bakersfield to Los Angeles. Shaffer remained in Bakersfield but later joined them. They released their EP, Love and Peace Dude, in 1989, via Triple Records. As L.A.P.D, they released the album, Who’s Laughing Now in 1991. They broke up after the release of the two albums.

Shaffer, Arvizu, Silveria contracted Brian Welch and Jonathan Davis to form a band. Someone suggested the name of the band to be corn but was rejected. Shaffer came with an idea to replace C with K and write R backward. Jonathan Davis is the one who designed the logo of the band.

The band rented a studio from Jeff Creath in Huntington Beach, known as Underground Chicken Sound. Large crowds were loitering outside the studio while recording, which made them come up with the song, “Clown.” According to Arvizu, the crowd gathered because it sounded different. In the summer of 1993, they began performing in gigs, and members concluded that touring was a “pain-in-the-ass.”

The band was spotted by Paul Pontius, an Immortal Records A&R employee. He described their sound as the new genre of rock. Korn released their first demo album, “Neidemayer’s Mind,” in 1993. The album was not well received as it had limited printing. This demo pioneered Korn to nu-metal, rhythm, and riffs.

Korn started working for their debut album in May 1994 with Ross Robinson, and by the end of June, they were through with the recording. They released their debut album “Korn” under Immortal Records, which peaked number one on the Heatseekers Albums chart and 72 in the Billboard 200.

They started touring after recording this album where their record company gave them enough money and a bus for their tour. They signed a contract with Warner Chappell Music prior to the release of their third album, Follow the Leader, between 1998 and 1999. They worked on their fourth studio album, Issues, produced by Brendan O’Brien, between 1999 and 2001.

Brian Welch departed from Korn after the release of their sixth album, Take a Look in the Mirror. However, he later returned to the band. David Silveria also departed from the band in 2006. Ray Luzier replaced David Silveria as the new drummer.
