When did she start her career?

Dash was born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey, the daughter of a priest. She began singing in church, but with her high school classmate Hendryx, she moved into secular pop. After Dash and Hendryx moved to Philadelphia, they formed the Bluebelles with LaBelle (then Patricia Holte) and Cindy Birdsong. With “Down the Aisle” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” the renamed Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles broke into the top 40 twice. During a few 1965 shows, the group also served as an opening act for the Rolling Stones.

Labelle were also a cultural force to be reckoned with. They adopted a glitzy image in the early 1970s, added more socially aware songs to their repertoire, and were the first black female pop group to perform in New York’s Metropolitan Opera House. Labelle, as space-age Afrofuturists, went where few all-women bands had gone before.

Dash was originally dissatisfied with the group when it disbanded in 1977, as she subsequently admitted: “What we had was working, and I was content with what we had.” Epic signed LaBelle and Hendrix to solo deals, but Dash was left out in the cold, at least at first.

Dash resurrected her career in the late 1980s with a new record and collaborations with Keith Richards. Beginning in the 1990s, Dash began to sing more jazz and blues. Labelle, on the other hand, was never forgotten by her or her bandmates. Dash’s most recent performance occurred on September 18 in Atlantic City, where she reunited with LaBelle onstage for an impromptu reunion.
