Successful career of Larry

Tesler developed the idea of versatility for copying and
pasting, and the idea of modeless apps. Tesler worked on the Apple Lisa and the
Apple Newton while at Apple, and helped develop Object Pascal and its use in
toolkits for application programming, like MacApp.

He did some programming jobs there on the side and worked as
a consultant after graduation offering his programming services in the area. He
received a lot of work, as he was one of only a few computer programmers
identified in the Palo Alto phone directory. A national recession, however,
caused this consultancy work to dry out. Tesler was interested in the
Midpeninsula Free University in the late 1960s, where he taught subjects such
as How to Break the IBM Monopoly, Computers Now, and Procrastination. In the
late 1960s Tesler also worked in the Stanford Artificial Intelligence
Laboratory. He created Compel, an early single assignment language, with Horace
Enea. The functional programming language was intended to increase the
naturalness of concurrent processing and was used to introduce programming
principles to beginners.

During both of Steve Jobs ‘ tragic trips to PARC in late
1979, Tesler had been present shortly after Jobs co-founded Apple Computer. He
showed the Xerox Alto computer system to Jobs during the first visit that it
had a graphical user interface. Although Alto was more of a curiosity for
Xerox, Jobs saw the graphic interface’s enormous potential, and soon after
returning to Apple’s headquarters, his team set out to create a similar graphic
user interface for their first computer, the Apple Lisa, along with additional
information provided by Xerox, and then perfected it in the first Apple
Macintosh. This led to Apple becoming one of the largest manufacturers of
personal computers while Xerox fell behind.
