Inception

Marvel entertainment Group, Inc. or Marvel or MEG was incorporated on 2nd of December in 1986 and it was immediately included in Marvel Productions and Marvel Comics. The same year, the company was bought by New World Entertainment Ltd as Cadence Industries liquidation part.

On 6th of January in 1998, Marvel Entertainment Group was again bought by MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings which is owned by Ronald Perelman. The company was bought at $82.5 million from New World. This deal however didn’t include Marvel Productions which they had decided to fold into New World’s Movie and TV business.

An initial public offering was made by Marvel and it offered 40% of the stock on 15th of July in 1991. $40 million of the proceeds from the sale was given to Andrews Group which was within MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings and was Marvel’s then direct parent.

In the early 1990s, the company then decided to expand through acquisitions and opening of new divisions. The first company they purchased was Fleer which was a trading card company and they bought the company on 24th of July in 1992. On 30th of April in 1993, they bought 46% of ToyBiz which made it possible for Marvel Company to make Marvel Toys.

Evolution

In 1993 and 1994, MEG and Andrews Group formed three corporations named Marvel Holding Inc., Marvel Holdings Companies and Marvel Parent Holdings, Inc. Under Perelman’s direction, these companies issued bonds of over one billion dollars and this was passed up to Perelman’s group of companies as dividends.

Marvel decided to acquire Panini Group on the 5th of July in 1994. Panini Group was an Italian sticker-maker. On 3rd November the same year, they acquired Malibu Comics and in December, a comic distributor of to comic-book shops named Heroes World Distribution was acquired.

There was no stopping for Marvel as they had purposed to acquire as many companies as possible that were in the line of their business. Something however went wrong and they reported a loss in late 1995 which was attributed to the shrinking market and the company’s large size.

On 4th of January 1996, they laid off 275 employees as a way of trying to save the company. Although the company filed for bankruptcy protection, they later decided to sell the company to Toy Biz to get it from the hands of the banks. The merger of Marvel Entertainment Group and ToyBiz gave birth to Marvel Enterprises which saved Marvel Enterprises from bankruptcy.
