He was widely regarded as a centrist and moderate Democrat in the United States Senate. Nelson favored same-sex marriage, lower taxes for low- and middle-income families, more environmental programs and regulation, protection of the Affordable Care Act, and Medicaid expansion. From 2013 to 2015, Nelson chaired the Senate Aging Committee, and from 2015 to 2019, he was a ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee.
