Professional career and Founding of Tencent
Ma’s first work was as a software developer for pagers at China Motion Telecom Development, a provider of telecommunications services and equipment. He paid $176 each month. He also worked in the research and development department for Internet calling services at Shenzhen Runxun Communications Co. Ltd. Ma Huateng went on to co-found Tencent in 1998 with four other classmates. Ma got the idea for the startup after seeing a presentation for ICQ, the world’s first Internet instant messaging service, which was created in 1996 by an Israeli company.
In a 2009 interview with China Daily, he said of Tencent’s founding, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”, paraphrasing a quote attributed to Isaac Newton and referencing the similarities between ICQ and OICQ. “We knew our product had a future, but at that time we just couldn’t afford it,” Ma remembered. In order to solve the problem, Ma asked for bank loans and even talked about selling the company.
Tencent turned to venture capitalists to fund its expanding operational expenditures because their prized offering OICQ was provided free of charge. In 2000, Ma resorted to IDC, a US investment firm, and Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW), a Hong Kong telecom carrier, to buy 40 percent of Tencent’s shares for US$2.2 million.
