Young joined the group after a successful audition, and the quintet, which had previously auditioned for a deal with Motown, returned with a song composed by Dobbins called “Please Mr. Postman.” On their second studio album With the Beatles, the Beatles recorded “Please Mr. Postman” in 1963. The Carpenters’ rendition of “Please Mr. Postman” reached No. 1 worldwide in 1975, and it was one of the duo’s 12 million-selling Gold-certified songs in the United States. It was also the second song by two separate artists to reach No. 1 at the same time.

After hearing the group’s music, Motown signed them and changed their name to the Marvelettes. The song was record and released in late 1961, becoming Motown’s first No. 1 Pop single—it also maintained the top spot on Billboard’s R&B chart for seven weeks. Young sung lead on the B-side of the single, “So Long, Baby,” a ballad.

While Young sang lead vocals on some of the Marvelettes’ album cuts, Horton was the group’s primary vocalist for singles. Young sang co-lead on several Marvelettes songs, including “Locking Up My Heart” and “Too Many Fish in the Sea,” which were also singles. In 1964, she sang her first (solo) lead on a Marvelettes record, “You’re My Remedy,” but the track didn’t sell well or chart well.
The dance song “I’ll Keep Holding On” was her first successful track as a lead singer. Young would be the group’s main lead vocalist from then on until the Marvelettes disbanded. She went on to sing lead on songs like “Don’t Mess with Bill,” “The Hunter Gets Capture by the Game,” “When You’re Young and in Love,” and “My Baby Must Be a Magician,” among others.
