First dates are exciting, but they can also be nerve-wracking. Luckily, there are things you can do to boost your confidence — like wearing an outfit that makes you feel good.

Not sure how to pick your outfit? We’ve got you covered, no matter what the situation. Here are six top tips for deciding what to wear for a first date.

1. Look at your existing wardrobe and pick out what makes you feel good

It’s all too easy to buy something new in a panic. But you’re going to want to feel like the best version of yourself, so look at the clothes you already own and choose something you know you feel confident in. It’ll put you at ease.

Check out this guide to defining your personal style if you’re not sure what yours is yet.

2. Consider the time and location of your date

What you’d wear for an evening date is different to what you’d wear during the day. There’s also the location to consider. Going for a coffee and a stroll is more casual than going out for a nice dinner — you’ll feel more comfortable if you dress accordingly.

Not sure what you’ll be doing? Go for smart casual. You want to look like you’ve made an effort, but without being overdressed.

3. Avoid trends

Now is not the time to experiment. If you normally follow what’s happening in fashion then by all means carry on doing so. If you don’t, you’re better off sticking to something more classic, and/or something that fits with your usual style.

4. Add quality accessories

A smart bag or wallet, a nice watch and a pair of statement earrings can all elevate the simplest of outfits. They’re the kind of pieces you can wear on many occasions, not just for dates, making them well worth the investment.

5. Keep your shoes comfortable

A lot of people notice shoes on a first date, so it’s easy to worry about them. What you wear will depend on where you’re going, but you can’t go wrong if you keep them:

  • Simple
  • Clean (and polished, if appropriate)
  • Not too high if you’re wearing heels — the last thing you want is to be unsteady on your feet
6. Don’t overthink your choice

Once you’ve made a decision, try not to second-guess yourself. If you’ve followed the steps above then you’ll look wonderful, so put any worries out of your mind and focus on getting to know your date. Good luck!
