Courtney Ross Biography

Courteney Ross is the girlfriend of George Floyd, who died in May 2020 after he was allegedly suffocated to death by a white police officer identified as Derek Chauvin as he tried to arrest for forgery.

According to her Facebook page, she has one daughter and works at a coffee shop in Minneapolis.

Courtney was the girlfriend of Floyd and the couple had been together for three years. During an i9nterview with CNN she described him as an “angel on earth”. She said he cannot die in vain.

She also urged people not to remember Floyd for how he died but for what he stood for.

“He stood up for people, he was there for people when they were down, he loved people that were thrown away. We prayed over every meal, we prayed if we were having a hard time, we prayed if we were having a good time.”

After the death of George protest erupted in Minneapolis which has led to the destruction of property as people were looting and burning down buildings. Talking about the riot she asked the protestors to protest in peace.

“Waking up this morning to see Minneapolis on fire would be something that would devastate Floyd. He loved the city. He came here [from Houston] and stayed here for the people and the opportunities. … Floyd was a gentle giant. He was about love and about peace.”

She added that she wants protesters “to know that I understand their frustration. … I want people to protest in a peaceful way”.

Who was George Floyd

George Floyd is the African-American man who died on May 25, 2020 minutes after he was pinned down by a Minneapolis police officer with his knee on his neck. This was after an employee at a Minneapolis grocery store called police after Floyd allegedly tried to pass a counterfeit $20 bill.

A video that circulated on social media showed Floyd on the ground with his hands cuffed behind his back while Officer Derek Chauvin presses him to the pavement with his knee on Floyd’s neck. In the video Floyd repeatedly said he can’t breathe but the officers ignored him and continued pinning him down. He soon after lost consciousness and was declared dead later.

Floyd grew up in Houston and attended Jack Yates High School where he played n the 1992 state championship game in the Houston Astrodome.

In 2014 he moved to Minneapolis in search of a job. He landed a job working security at a Salvation Army store in downtown Minneapolis. He later started working two jobs, one driving trucks and another as a bouncer at Conga Latin Bistro, where he was known as “Big Floyd.”
