Howard Hesseman was an American actor. He is perhaps best know for his role in the sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, where he play DJ Dr. Hesseman. Johnny’s fever. Howard grew up in Lebanon and was raise by his parents until the age of five when they divorced, mainly by his mother and stepfather who was a policeman. He attend Silver-ton High School and after graduating in 1958 he attended the University of Oregon. he was born on February 27, 1940.

Later he decided to give up his university studies to devote himself entirely to theater. He moved to San Francisco and worked as a radio DJ under the pseudonym Don Sturdy. Howard did this through his acting projects and was one of the founders of The Committee, an improvisational comedy group from the area and formed a group with actor David Ogden Styers. He started performing as Don Sturdy, appearing in an episode of Dragna in which he played the role of a hippie, the editor of an underground newspaper.

Hesseman, who is also know as Don Sturdy, plays the Counter-boy, who serves hot dogs and root beers to Goober and Noam Pitlik old trade school opponent Roy Swanson.

Aside from that, in the sixth season of the show, Howard became a playwright, writing a play on the characters in the group. He participated in numerous sketches on The Dick Cavett Show in 1969, uncredited with The Committee (but at the time under the name Don Sturdy) and in one sketch with guest Janis Joplin.

He also appeared in the Disney cult classic Flight of the Navigator in 1986. In 9 episodes of The New WKRP in Cincinnati, he reprized his role. He also directed several episodes in the 1991-93 revival of the show. In a documentary about Woodstock in 1994, Hesseman featured a lost video of Joplin.

He had two appearances on Saturday Night Live, one in which he paid tribute to the recently deceased John Belushi and delivered jokes about him, and the other in which he mooned President Ronald Reagan. He also asked viewers to capture the image and email photographs to NBC. Hesseman also appeared in three episodes of That ’70s Show in 2001.

Cause of death

The actor reportedly pass away after experiencing complications from a December 2021 colon surgery, his death being confirm by Saturday Night Live alum and Howard’s friend, Laraine Newman, on Sunday, January 30, 2022. He is survive by his wife of 33 years, actress Caroline Ducrocq.
