Meyer wed Francine Winskill in 1976; they had two sons and later divorced. He was married to Catherine Meyer, Baroness Meyer in 1997, founder of the charity Parents & Abducted Children Together, and an active board member of the Transatlantic Forum for Education and Diplomacy. 

She is a British Life Peer and a former business woman. In 1999, she founded the charity PACT, now Action Against Abduction. In October 2020, she was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Ukraine. During their five and a half years in America, she campaigned against international parental child abduction alongside a number of American parents in a similar situation with Germany.

He received the title of Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1998. (KCMG). The Arbuthnot Banking Group has Meyer on its board of non-executive directors. Additionally, he served as the chairman of the Pagefield Advisory Board and was an honorary fellow at Cambridge University’s Peterhouse. 

He was a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers. On April 3, 2012, the Company designated him Court Assistant honor is causa. Meyer served as a Senior Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute starting in 2013. At the University of North Carolina, Meyer was appointed Morehead-Cain Alumni Distinguished Visiting Professor in 2010.

Meyer was born on February 22, 1944, in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, to Reginald Henry Rome Meyer and his wife Eve. 13 days before his son was born, Reginald, a flying lieutenant in Coastal Command of the RAF, was shot down over the Greek island of Icaria. In 2011, Meyer visited the island and spoke with witnesses to his father’s shooting down and burial.

Meyer received his education at Peterhouse at the University of Cambridge, where he received a degree in history, the Lycée Henri-IV in Paris, and a residential independent school for boys called Lancing College (now coed) (he was an honorary fellow of Peterhouse from 2002 on). He attended the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna after graduation.

Sir Christopher, who was Britain’s ambassador to the United States from 1997-2003 was attacked by two teenagers in Victoria underground station in London. He was left with a bleeding and swollen eye socket, a burst lip and a suspected broken nose from the attack at the age of 74.

Meyer died from a stroke on 27 July 2022, aged 78, at his holiday home in Megève, in the French Alps.

The current ambassador, Dame Karen Pierce, paid tribute, saying: “He was a great diplomat and a great character.”

In a tribute on Twitter, Mr Johnson wrote: “Saddened to hear of the death of Sir Christopher Meyer.

“He was a dedicated public servant throughout his career and devoted his life to international diplomacy.”
